Fly Me to the Moon …A Celebration of the First Moon Walk

I hope you will join me in celebrating the 50^th anniversary of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s walk on the moon. 

The Eagle has landed. One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind! What is your memory of the moon mission, Apollo XI? I was 16 when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon on July 20, 1969. I watched it on TV with my grandmother, who was born during the horse and buggy era, and my cousin, April.  I remember how amazed my grandmother was that she was watching men walking on the moon. I was further intrigued to find out that Buzz Aldrin had roomed in college with April’s uncle. Years later I discovered that my father-in-law was on the design committee for the lunar module. Those are my connections to the lunar landing, what are yours?

I am so excited to announce my Call for Entries tentatively entitled “Fly Me to the Moon”, commemorating the 50^th Anniversary of Man’s Walk on the Moon. This multifaceted collection will be published in a book by Schiffer Publishing in the fall of 2018. I would like to invite you to submit an 18”W x 30”L quilt in one of the following categories.

Commemorating the Moon Walk – images you remember from the newspaper or history books. (Images on the NASA website (www.nasa.gov) are in the public domain, except for the NASA logo itself.)

Memories of July 20, 1969 – These will be very personal quilts reflecting on your own memories of July 20, 1969 when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin first walked on the moon.

Apollo Missions – There were 17, each unique in its own way

Apollo Astronauts – 12 men walked on the surface, I’d like a quilt about each of them.  Apollo 1 Astronauts, who died, should be represented and the heroes of Apollo 13, should be as well. Other Apollo Astronauts will be included, as room is available.

Scientific Moon Images  -  Phases, Tides, surface images, eclipses, let your inner scientist out to play.

Moon Idioms  - We’ve been using references to the moon to communicate since time began, show your favorite.

Moon Songs – What moon song starts you humming, tapping your foot or strolling down memory lane?

Moon Pop Culture – Did you read your kids Goodnight Moon, eat Moon Pies, follow Moon Mullins in the comics? Share some of your favorite images of Moon Pop Culture.

Romantic Moon – These will be highly personal, I’m sure.

Moon Myths and Superstitions – What have we believed about the moon, even though science didn’t support these beliefs? What stories from other cultures were told to explain the moon, its phases and its effects on the native people?

The book will be divided into chapters, some longer than others. This will be a juried collection. It will travel, locations to be determined. The beauty of this collection is that it can travel all together or in smaller groups for specific purposes. I hope to get them exhibited in quilt shows, and art shows, as well as some NASA facilities.

I am encouraged by NASA’s involvement in the fiber arts. At Houston last year there was an exhibit of star blocks that were made in response to a challenge by astronaut Karen Nyberg. Over 2200 blocks were submitted and were made into 28 quilt panels. NASA also had a booth at the show in support of Nyberg. In Huntsville, Alabama at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, a Saturn V rocket is scheduled to be wrapped in 8000 pieces of fiber art by the International Fiber Cooperative. Aptly named the Dream Rocket Project, it will be displayed in Huntsville for 60 days starting on or about May 14, 2015. I am hopeful that some of our quilts will be displayed in some of the Space Centers and Museums.

Following this introductory letter are the rules of the challenge, the registration form and some information on the Apollo missions etc. that might be helpful to you.

I hope you will come out to play with us. Shoot for the moon, it’s going to be a great ride.

  Fly Me to the Moon: Guidelines and Rules and Registration

The 18”W x 30”L quilts are to be a visual celebration of Man’s First Walk on the Moon.  All works must be original designs. Do not use patterns or other copyrighted materials. Text may be used, if it is used to identify an Apollo mission or identify an astronaut. No photo transfer techniques are to be used to avoid copyright infringement. You may use photos on the NASA website as inspiration.

The quilts will be traveling and will be stacked, so they must be constructed flat. Embellishments, which could damage other quilts or be damaged by stacking, are not allowed. Make sure your embellishments are not fragile. Please do not ask for special handling, individual care and/or special packing.  This is not a 3-D project.

Quilts will be juried by a panel of experienced art quilters. Professional quality photographs of your art quilt and a 250 word artist statement are required for jurying.  Images must be submitted on a CD. ​Submit one overall DIGITAL image and one detail DIGITAL image for each quilt.  Save your digital images as a high quality JPEG or TIFF file.  The finished image should be a minimum of 3000 pixels on the longest side. DO NOT send me your actual quilt with your initial submission. The artist statement and photographs of the quilt are due to me by October 16, 2015. You will be notified of the results of the jurying on or before January 15, 2016. Shipping information will be provided at the time of your acceptance.

Two hard copy, signed release forms must be included with delivery of quilt, one for Schiffer Publishing Ltd., the other to permit travel with exhibit(s).  These forms will be emailed to you.  An artist statement of 250 words or less should also be included with the photos of your quilt, including information about materials and techniques, and delivered to me with your quilt by October 16, 2015. 

In addition to the non-refundable $40 registration fee, artists will be responsible for delivery of the quilt to and from Susanne Jones.  If the quilt needs to be shipped, the artist will pay shipping and insurance to and from Susanne. The registration fee will be used to cover shipping to and from the exhibit venues, no additional fees will be required.

Each quilt must have a sleeve and a label, both made to specifications to be sent with the confirmation

Quilts will travel for up to two years. Due to the anniversary that this exhibit is celebrating, the two years will most likely be from 2018-2020. Please do not publish pictures of your quilt or portions thereof via social media or otherwise until given the go ahead by the author to do so. Please note that you may choose to only submit your quilt for the manuscript and decline the exhibit opportunities. Artists may submit more than one quilt.
