Apollo 9, the third manned Apollo mission, was the first flight of the Command/Service Module (CSM) with the Lunar Module (LM). Its three-person crew; Commander James McDivitt, Command Module Pilot David Scott, and Lunar Module Pilot Rusty Schweickart; tested several critical aspects to landing on the Moon, including the Lunar Module engines, backpack life support systems, navigation systems, and docking maneuvers. The mission was the second manned launch of a Saturn V rocket. The crew spent 10 days in low Earth orbit, performing the first manned flight of a Lunar Module, docking and undocking of a Lunar Module for the first time, walking in space twice and docking two manned spacecrafts for the second time. The mission allowed the Lunar Module to be approved for further missions.
